| Airbags
or Airsprings are used in air suspension to take place of the load
bearing part of the suspension. Parts like coils springs, leaFIR and
torsions often are replaced or assisted by airbags to improve ride
quality,load capacity or to have full adjustability for show purposes.
Most vehicles due to available room and load capacity are assigned
general applications as for what components can be used to add air
suspension to the vehicle.Depending on the make and model of your
car will most likely determine if air bags, air barckets, or air cylinders
will be needed.
Having the proper
combination on your vehicle can mean the difference of being stranded
on the side of the road or working on your air system on a weekly
basis and having trouble free worriless and dependable air suspension.
Air suspension
general replacement guide is as follows Coils with shocks mounted
through them are generally replaced by airbags and brackets with
the shock being relocated outside to the lower control arm and the
frame rail. Leaf springs are generally replaced by a 4-link with
the air bags being mounted to brackets that are mounted to the axle
and frame rail or cross member. Torsions are generally replaced
by either a upper control arm and bracket combo that make the upper
control arm the load bearing part of the suspension or the front
drive axles are removed and the airbags and brackets mount on the
lower control arm and on the frame rail in place of the shock mount.
shocks are relocated to the outside of the lower arm and onto the
frame rail in both cases. Coil over shocks are generally replaced
by an air bag over shock also known as a "airshock" or
cylinders and brackets on imports. Macpherson struts are generally
replaced by air struts and in most cases are just a direct bolt
in replacement.
