Terms & Conditions for Cores
Many stock replacement parts such as turbos, injectors, injection pumps, and high pressure oil pumps have a core charge that is associated with the new replacement part. You must return the old part to receive a refund on the core charge.
If you plan on returning your core you have two options.
Thoroughbred Diesel offers defer the upfront core charge when purchasing via credit card payment.
OPTION 1: You can accept the core charge, which means you will be charged for the part AND the core at time of purchase. You still have the option to send it back, and if you do, the core will be refunded back on the card used, presuming the core meets core criteria and the core is returned within 30 days from the time your order is received. If you return your core after 30 days you may refer to the Core Charge Timeline below as to how you will be refunded.
Core Charge Timeline
OPTION 2: You can defer the core charge. If you defer, you will not be charged for the core at the time of purchase. You will have 21 days from the time your order is received to send the core back. If the core is not received within the 21 days, your credit card will be charged for the core amount on your order. If you return your core after 21 days, you may refer to the Core Charge Timeline below as to how you will be refunded. When Core deferral (Pay Core Charge Later) is limited to payment by credit card only. ***When using PayPal or Affirm as your method of payment “Core Deferral (Pay Core Charge Later)” is not available. The core must be paid at time of purchase. ***

Some new items, for example the Alliant product line, require the return of the old core. Cores must be like for like and include return valve.
Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) that mean your VP44 needs replaced:P0216 (often referred to as the code of death and most common code for VP44 pump failure)P1688P1689P0215P0251 - P0260Thoroughbred Diesel offers replacement Bosch Vp44 Fuel Injection Pumps that have been rebuilt by certified Bosch tech and have been tested on a test stand for 4 hrs before the pump is sent to you. Bosch VP 44 diesel pumps are also upgraded with all the latest upgrades required by Bosch. These VP44 injection pumps come with a 2 yr unlimited mileage warranty. If you are placing performance parts on your truck it is highly recommended that you use a performance lift pump such as the Airdog fuel system or Fass Fuel Systems. An Airdog or Fass Fuel System will supply the Injection pump with the fuel pressure that is need no matter what performance upgrades you have on your truck. We also offer several different gauge options from Autometer and Isspro to monitor your fuel pressure so you know when your lift pump is going out and can fix the problem before you lose your Injection Pump. The cheapest way to monitor your fuel pressure would be BD s early warning light. Preventing problems before they occur is the best way to take care of your truck.A cam ring with three plungers, a rotor, and an electronically controlled fueling solenoid valve is used to develop and distribute the high pressure required for injection. A worn or damaged internal transfer pump, plunger, or fueling valve can affect the pressure and amount of fuel injected, thus reducing the power from the engine. Generally, if the fuel injection pump is injecting fuel from one outlet, it will deliver from all outlets. VP44 Timing Principles Timing in the VP44 is controlled by an internal timing piston coupled to a cam ring inside the pump. The timing piston is moved by fuel pressure. The amount of fuel pressure in the timing piston assembly housing is controlled by an internal transfer pump and a pulsating timing solenoid valve. As pump speed increases, the fuel pressure to the timing piston assembly also increases. Based on the inputs from the fuel pump control module (FPCM), the timing solenoid valve pulses to vary the pressure to move the timing piston, which results in the cam ring moving to the desired position to achieve the commanded timing. The more pressure created by the internal transfer pump and timing solenoid valve, the more the timing will advance; therefore, timing range capability is increased at higher rpm's.*Performance chip & add on disclaimer - Tampering with the pumps wires can cause premature pump failure. If the wires are cut the pump is no longer warrantable, and any repairs that need to be made to the injection pump will be the buyers responsibility. In the VP44 pump the fuel is used to cool and lubricate the pump, and the tolerances between the head and the rotor is very fine. Performance chip add on's affect the cooling rate of the pump. The pump will become hotter due to excessive RPM's from the chips programming. When the throttle is backed off the fuel to the pump is reduced, and the pumps cooling capabilities are greatly reduced. Since the pump is hotter from the increased RPM's the rotor seizes in the head and the pump fails. An alternative to cutting into the pumps wires is to use a chip that plugs directly into the trucks ECM. This approach will allow for an increase in HP while not excessively heating the fuel pump.

Yes our 2 yr warranty pump will have new electronics.
No break in period required.
If you plan to send your core in, you can defer the charge. That means you have 21 days to get your core back to us. Yes, these pumps do come with the overflow valve. Than you for your business!
No power gain. The automatic trucks ECM will only command the 235hp. Core charge would be more.
No. Your ecm will not command the extra hp. 6 spd. Manual trucks.
No, we can run your ESN to verify.
Yes. Please contact our warranty dept. ext. 271
No, there is no core charge, for the vp44,if you send your core back within 14 business days.
You will get charged $500.00 if you do not return the core. The 2 yr warranty vp44 is $1149.00, 1 yr warranty $975.00.
This method will vary depending on what year your truck is. If you have a 98.5-99 Cummins there will be a 1/8 by 27 NPT port on top of the fuel filter housing. For this year truck, this is the most accurate place to insert your fuel pressure sensor to read the pressure supplied by your lift pump. For trucks ranging in year 99.5-2002 fuel pressure should be checked at the Schrader valve located on the side of the VP44.
Hard starts as they relate to VP44 injections pumps are caused by lack of fuel or over pressurization by the lift pump. If a lift pump is going bad and failing to supply the proper amount of fuel to the injection pump, then the truck will hard start due to lack of fuel. However, a newly installed lift pump that is pushing over 15 PSI to the VP44 can also cause hard starts. The VP44 is a very sensitive pump and needs approx. 12 PSI to run properly. Once you start getting about 15 PSI to the injection pump, you actually start to over pressurize the pump causing it to act as if you had a flooded engine.
There are two wires running from the back of the pump up to the computer portion on the top of the pump. This computer portion is known as the PSG. The wire that is closest to the engine and connects to the PSG is the wire that needs to be tapped for installation of some modules. Keep in mind that tapping this wire will void the warranty on your VP44. Thoroughbred Diesel recommends installing a BD stealth cover instead of notching the tap wire directly.
There is a diaphragm inside the VP44 that is somewhat sensitive. This particular diaphragm works best under pressures between 10 and 15 PSI. Some pumps will be able to run higher than that but we don't recommend it. After changing your VP44, if you notice continued hard starting or feel as though the pump is getting bogged down, it is probably time to check the lift pump pressure. Our recommendation for optimum fuel pressure is 12 PSI of the VP44.
The most common cause of VP44 failure is lack of fuel. Dodge trucks 98.5 and up are notorious for having weak lift pumps. Unlike most injection pumps, the VP44 is fuel cooled and lubricated. Therefore, if its fuel supply comes from a weak lift pump, it is very easy for the VP44 to overheat and cause damage to itself. This lack of fuel results in one of two types of failure within the VP44. One is that the diaphragm inside of the pump is damaged and does not allow the pump to build up the appropriate amount of pressure. The second is that the overheating causes the computer portion of the pump to also overheat and thus, creates a communication failure between the ECM and the Injection pump.
